The last known photograph of Madeleine McCann has been released exactly three
weeks after she was snatched from her apartment in Portugal.
Madeleine is shown smiling and dangling her feet into a swimming pool, less
than eight hours before she was abducted from her bed as her parents Kate and
Gerry McCann dined nearby.
The picture of Madeleine, who is wearing a pink smock top, white shorts and a
sun hat, was taken by 38-year-old Kate on her own camera.
The picture was taken at 2.29pm on May 3 although the display shows 1.29pm as
the camera's clock is out by one hour.
Mr and Mrs McCann refuse to give up hope and remain convinced their daughter is
alive and well after she was snatched from their holiday apartment in Praia da
Luz in the Algarve
on May 3 as they dined nearby.
Backed by an army of friends and family in Portugal
and Britain,
their Catholic faith continues to give them hope and extraordinary strength.
Yesterday Mr and Mrs McCann travelled for four hours to visit the shrine of
Fatima, north of Lisbon,
where there were a series of visions of the Virgin Mary to three shepherd
children 90 years ago.
The couple is expected to begin thrashing out the details of a planned tour
later in a bid to raise their daughter's profile across Europe
and beyond. Meanwhile, 115 million web users have visited the Madeleine
campaign site.
Meanwhile, Portuguese police have come under fresh criticism about how the
investigation has been conducted.
Child protection expert Mark Williams-Thomas, who visited the village early on
in the hunt for Madeleine said the area where she disappeared was "without
doubt, the worst preserved crime scene I have ever seen".
He said the investigation had been hampered by the police's failure to "do
