Kate and Gerry McCann have flown to the United States for an interview on the Oprah Winfrey Show to mark two years since their daughter Madeleine's disappearance.

The couple will use their high-profile appearance on the TV programme to release new images of how their missing girl may look now.

They will visit the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children in Alexandria, Virginia, whose experts have created the computer-aged pictures of Madeleine.

Grief is still etched on Kate McCann's face as she prepares to fly out of Heathrow Airport to be interviewed by Oprah Winfrey on the two-year anniversary of her daughter Madeleine's disappearance
The show will also go inside the couple's London home to spend a day with their four-year-old twins Sean and Amelie.

Madeleine's brother and sister are now older than she was when she disappeared.

The McCanns flew out of Heathrow Airport with their spokesman, Clarence Mitchell, and Emma Loach, director of a Channel 4 documentary to be shown after the May 3 anniversary.

New hope: Kate and Gerry McCann at Heathrow yesterday
They will record the interview with Winfrey in Chicago tomorrow before returning to the UK early on Sunday.

Mr Mitchell said the couple had agreed to appear on the famous U.S. talk show because of its massive global reach - it is broadcast in 144 countries around the world.

He said: 'Oprah had been pressing for an interview from very early on.

'Initially Kate and Gerry were focused entirely on the search for Madeleine on the ground.

'They were reluctant to do a programme perceived by some as celebrity-based - they certainly didn't feel they were celebrities and were loath to do anything that had that feel about it.'

It was then 'inappropriate' for the McCanns to speak out after Portuguese police made them 'arguidos', or formal suspects, in the case in September 2007, he said.

But their arguido status was lifted last July and the couple now believe that the Winfrey interview will help the ongoing search for their daughter.

Madeleine was nearly four when she went missing from her family's holiday flat in Praia da Luz, Portugal, on May 3 2007 while her parents dined with friends nearby.

Despite a massive police investigation and huge publicity worldwide, she has not been found.

Life with a missing child must be like a living hell. I feel so sorry for them, and the poor girl. However, I think the public can no longer help - it is enormously unlikely she will be found, still I understand why they are doing it. They need to be able to grieve, which they can't do yet.

good luck to them I say!

a potential audience of 100 million people can be reached through the Oprah show and might just bring in that tiny lead someone doesn't think means much but does

Best not to switch on the Oprah Show for a while, that's my advice.

There is a fairly lengthy delay between the filming of this show and when it is actually aired on TV - I know it is months in Australia and here as well. Nobody will see it for months - thye should have appeared on a show more local in Europe.

Why don't they publish the photos worldwide. Not many western countries have Oprah on these days.

i would just like to say that i am amazed by the courage and dignity that Kate and Gerry have shown and continue to show since the awful day that Madeleine was snatched and the circus that followed. i cannot begin to comprehend what losing a child in this way has been like, i am a mother my self. but one thing i do know they are absolutely right to never give up the search. some one, some where knows what happened to Madeleine. i too believe that the truth of what happened to her will be discovered i wish them all the luck in the world, and truely hope that one day Madeleine will be found.

Their dignity and fortitude has been amazing. I do so hope that The Oprah Winfrey interview will bring in enough donations to The Fund to allow The McCanns to go on searching. I am sure that Madeleine is out there somewhere.

And I hope that it will give other such unfortunate parents the courage to go on.
