CALCUTTA NEWS: 18 JUNE 2007

Calcutta News.Net
Monday 18th June, 2007

Portuguese police are marking the 50th day since Madeleine McCann was abducted from her family holiday home in the Portuguese resort of Praia da Luz.

Her family are said to be dismayed by a comment made by Chief Inspector Olegario de Sousa of the Portuguese Police.

He says potentially crucial forensic evidence may have been unwittingly destroyed by the family and friends, when they crowded into the bedroom from which Madeleine disappeared.

When the alarm was raised, more than 20 people went into the McCann's apartment, including other holidaymakers and staff from the resort, who touched furniture and opened and closed doors.

Chief Inspector de Sousa believes the presence of so many people, especially in the room where Madeleine slept with her brother and sister, would have complicated the work of the forensic team.

He said, at the very worst the large group would have destroyed all the evidence, perhaps proving fatal for the investigation.
