Madeleine McCann's parents have put their European tour on hold following a mystery phone call which could provide a new lead in the case.

According to Spanish police, a "credible" call came from a man using an unregistered pay-as-you-go mobile from an unidentified country who asked to speak directly to Kate and Gerry McCann.

The country is not thought to be Morocco, where a previous possible sighting of Madeleine was reported, and the caller did not reveal his identity or nationality, although his information was considered important enough to alert the couple.

A Spanish police source said: "A man called saying he knew where Madeleine was and wanted to speak to the McCanns.

"This did not appear to be a crank call and the information was felt credible enough to warrant the couple being informed immediately."

Mr and Mrs McCann - who are currently in Germany - have put their European search for their daughter on hold in case they need to act.

Madeleine was snatched 35 days ago from her bed at the couple's holiday apartment in the village of Praia da Luz on the Algarve.

Mr and Mrs McCann had been due to leave for Tempelhof airport in Berlin to fly to the Netherlands at around 3pm yesterday but were advised that the caller might try to contact them, so they stayed on at the British embassy.

After the caller failed to make contact again, they left Berlin at 7.30pm, three hours later than planned, for the hour-long flight to Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam to continue their search.
