The Government has
announced the closure of the Forensic Science Service, the company that
has helped solve crimes such as the Suffolk prostitute murders.
Crime Prevention Minister James Brokenshire said the service would be
wound up as it was making operational losses of £2m a month and was
likely to run out of money by January.
The aim is that there will be "no continuing state interest in a
forensics provider by March 2012", Mr Brokenshire told MPs.
In a statement, the miniister said the service would be broken up and
eventually closed as a government-owned company over the next 12 to 15
months.
The FSS supplies forensic services to the 43 police forces of England
and Wales and also provides consultancy services to countries outside
the UK.
It has been a government owned company under the Home Office since 2005.
The FSS has pioneered every major breakthrough in the field of DNA
analysis in the criminal justice system, and developed the world's first
and largest national DNA database.
Its status from a government agency to a government-owned company means
that it must compete with other suppliers of forensic services and prove
cost-effective. |
