The school that Madeleine McCann was due to start at this week is leaving one of its desks empty for her in the hope that she will sit there in the future.

The four-year-old was due to start classes there on Thursday.

A coat peg has also been left for the missing girl at Bishop Ellis Catholic primary school in Thurmaston, Leicestershire.

Pupils will say a prayer for Madeleine at the start of term where they will wish for her safe return.

Since her disappearance, a candle has been burning for the youngster at the school.

Headteacher Gail Neill said it symbolised their hope and her spirit.

Ms Neill said the school was deeply saddened that it could not yet welcome Madeleine.

She added that a place had been prepared for her in exactly the same way as for the other children.

Ms Neill said: "It will remain ready and waiting as we continue to pray, along with her parents, in the hope of her safe return.

"We keep a candle burning for Madeleine in our school. It symbolises our hope and prayers and her spirit.

"It will continue to burn until she is returned."

Madeleine disappeared from her bedroom in a Portuguese holiday resort on May 3.

There have been several reported sightings of her, though none have been confirmed.
