NEWS REPORTS INDEX

MAIL: THURSDAY 25 OCTOBER 2007

Last updated at 20:52 25 October 2007

Nearly 70 per cent of the callers to a Spanish TV show said they thought the McCanns were not telling the truth about their daughter's disappearance.

The vote of no confidence from the Spanish public in the McCanns came after the couple chose a popular Spanish TV station for their first public interview since they were named offical suspects in the Madeleine's disappearance.

They reportedly chose Antena 3 ahead of better known broadcasters such as Oprah Winfrey and Barbara Walters because they believe their daughter is most likely to be in Spain, Portugal or north Africa

The couple used the emotional interview to launch their new, privately funded, hotline to appeal for information about Madeleine's disappearance

The couple used the emotional televised interview to launch a confidential 24-hour phone line which they say has drawn a "very good response", according to Clarence Mitchell, the family spokesman.

Today, they revealed the phone line, which is manned by private detectives and targeted at Spain, Portugal and north Africa, had already brought people forward.

However, the McCanns would not comment on the number of calls made to the +34 902 300213 number or whether the calls had delivered any new leads.

Clarence Mitchell, the McCanns' spokesman, said: "I can confirm we have already had a very good response to our confidential, anonymous phone line in Spain.

"However, we will not be commenting on the volume of calls being received or whether any fresh lines are being pursued.

"As this is a private investigation it will remain exactly that - private."

Asked about the last time she saw Madeleine, she said: "She was very happy and very loving and I know Madeleine was very happy with her life. She is special."

The Portuguese police have backed the new phone line, said Mr Mitchell.

Astonishing results! This may sound harsh, but they went public, so they must expect public opinion. However, the high lack of public support from the Spaniards is probably not something they had anticipated.

If Spain is where they think she might be, Antena 3 is far better known than any American chat show.

Appalling, if that's the mentality in Spain then I shall not waste my money visiting there.

'Don't say anything until they've turned off microphone', Gerry warns
Kate on Spanish TV

MAIL: THURSDAY 25 OCTOBER 2007

Gerry McCann warned his wife: "Don't say anything till they've taken off your microphone" as she broke down in tears at the end of an interview on Spanish television.

Kate started sobbing as the 30-minute interview by a Spanish TV presenter drew to a close.

But instead of turning to comfort her, Gerry's immediate reaction was to whisper the warning in extraordinary scenes played out to millions of viewers.

The couple were savaged in a phone vote which accompanied an exclusive interview they gave to late-night programme 360 grados on Spain's Antena 3.

Tears: Kate McCann wept last night as she told Spanish TV that she clung to the belief that Madeleine is still alive
Nearly 70 per cent of the callers said they thought the McCanns were not telling the truth about their daughter's disappearance while only 30 per cent gave the couple their backing.

Gerry nearly stormed out of the television interview after being quizzed over drugging his children.

Sources said Mr McCann was "fuming" at being asked a question that the Spanish interviewer had promised not to pose. Mr McCann stormed out of a previous interview with another Spanish TV channel.

A source said today: "Kate and Gerry were annoyed towards the end of the interview because of the drugs question. Gerry was on the verge of another walkout."

A source close to the McCanns insisted Gerry's warning to Kate followed a question about allegations they had drugged their daughter which the programme makers had been told they could not ask.

The source said: "Kate was very upset she was asked the question and Gerry was furious. "What was said wasn't said because they have anything to hide."

Anguish: Kate McCann, sitting next to husband Gerry, struggled to control her emotions during the interview
The anguished mother-of-three said: "As Madeleine's Mummy I feel in my heart that she is there.

"I don't know how anyone could harm anyone as beautiful as Madeleine."

In her first television interview since she was named as an official suspect in the search for Madeleine, she said she was as confident of finding her daughter alive now as she was on the day she went missing nearly six months ago.

"Maybe even more so," she said. "I think she is possibly being held by someone in their house but I don't know.

"I strongly believe Madeleine is out there and we have to do everything we can."

The 39-year-old GP broke down as she told how her life felt incomplete without her daughter, whose fourth birthday passed shortly after she disappeared.

"I feel sad and I feel lonely and our life is not as happy without Madeleine," she said.

"I feel anxious she is not with us."

The cameras were stopped while she composed herself.

When the interview resumed Mrs McCann revealed how her two-year-old twins Sean and Amelie ask about their big sister.

She said Amelie told her: "Madeleine is coming home to my lovely house and I am going to share my toys with her."

She continued: "They do ask about Madeleine. Madeleine was a big part of their life.

"They are not upset and they are not distressed but they are very much aware she is not there."

Her husband Gerry said: "The hardest thing for me is when they say, 'When is Madeleine coming back home?' and we have to say, 'We don't know but everyone is looking for her'."

Mrs McCann broke down again at the end of the interview when she was asked about the last time she saw her daughter.

Missing: 'I strongly believe she is out there and we have to do everything we can'
She said: "She was very happy and very loving and I know Madeleine was very happy with her life. She is special."

Mr and Mrs McCann gave their first television interview to the Spanish channel Antena 3 as they launched a new hotline targeting people in Spain, Portugal and North Africa, appealing to them for clues as to their daughter's fate.

They had been warned by their legal team that they could be prosecuted for talking publicly while still bound by the strict Portuguese secrecy laws.

But their lawyers cleared them to speak last week.

Broadcasters from all over the world, including Oprah Winfrey and Barbara Walters, had asked for the first broadcast interview, but the family wanted to target the Iberian peninsula.

Mrs McCann said: "Somebody knows something. It is not about us. It is about Madeleine.

"We have not even seen her since she was four. She needs our help. She needs her family."

Mr McCann, also 39, added: "We want people to try to help reunite our lovely four-year-old girl with her parents."

The couple said they were confident they would be cleared of any involvement in Madeleine's disappearance.

Mrs McCann declared herself "100 per cent" sure while Mr McCann said he was "much more optimistic" since a new officer, Paulo Rebelo, was appointed to the case.

The consultant cardiologist said: "We have not been charged with anything. Investigations are continuing. The only thing is finding Madeleine."

His wife added: "It really is secondary. I will take anything that is thrown at me."

Mrs McCann defended her and her husband against accusations they had seemed calm and "too cool" in the weeks and months after their daughter vanished.

"We know we are innocent, totally innocent. That is why we are calm. We know each other," she said.

Mr McCann said the couple remained "completely united" and added: "Nothing that has happened to us has come close to upsetting us the way Madeleine going missing did.

"We have our own heartache and grief but we are absolutely determined to help in the search."

He described the last time he saw his daughter, saying: "I was the last to see her. I saw her and thought how beautiful she was, and how lucky I was to be a father of three children."

The couple refused to discuss claims that DNA evidence was found in their apartment and their hire car, and dismissed claims that they sedated their children as "ludicrous".

But Mr McCann said: "We are certainly not scared.

"There is no evidence DNA tests will show anything other than us being completely innocent."

He said the group of friends who were with them in Praia da Luz - the so-called Tapas Nine - knew they were not involved in the disappearance.

He added: "They know we are innocent, absolutely. They will help us. They will clear our names."

Asked if he had any regrets, he replied: "Not from the minute we found Madeleine gone."

Roberto Arce, who interviewed the McCanns for the Spanish television programme 360 Grados, spoke later about the couple's demeanour and emotional state.

"Kate looked prostrate with pain," he said. "Much more depressed than I've ever seen her before. She cried for the first time.

"Gerry looked much happier with the massive campaign that's been put in place to find his daughter."

He added: "The McCanns don't say in the interview there are clues Madeleine - dead or alive - is in Spain.

"But privately they confessed afterwards there are.

"I can't say what they are and I'm not sure they're necessarily more solid than other leads.

"But they maintain there are, in Spain as well as in neighbours like Morocco, but that Spain's involvement in all this is very important."

This poor woman, I just feel so helpless for her. I know it's a hard thing to digest, but I think the best thing would be for the McCanns to grieve their daughter and try to restore some normality back into their lives.

She was criticized for not crying and now she cries. Why does this seem stage-managed?

These poor parents... I hope they find their daughter soon, I can think of nothing worse. I hope they know that they do have supporters out there that are pulling for them and their family.

Sorry, but it's a bit late. Even the stiff upper lip doesn't cover this delay - a suggestion from the PR firm, perhaps? I don't think this late show of emotion will sway the doubters - the country is still split.

This story has now run its course. Unless Madeleine is found or someone is charged in connection with her disappearance, there is no more to be said at the moment. I think the media should step back and let the parents deal with their grief in private.

If she was more responsible she would not be in that situation. As for the tears I very much agree with Susan, Avon, CT. USA. I do hope Madeline is safe and well and that she is found.

However there are other kids out there and other families why is this getting so much attention, surely they deserve the same treatment.

I think by now most people have had enough of this case and the actions of the McCaan team which are so responsive in covering up any criticism of the McCaan's.

Terri, Windsor
Do you have children? I hope I don't sound argumentative because that is not my intention. As a mother I don't think it would be possible to move on when you feel in your heart that your child is out there somewhere. I would search until the day I died if one of my children were missing. I also can't criticise how the McCann's have reacted in front of the cameras because I don't know what I'd do. We are watching this family when they know we're watching them. We don't know what goes on behind closed doors and as far as i've read from people who do actually know them, they aren't coping that well, especially Kate McCann. The poor woman is waking in the middle of the night thinking that Madeleine's in the room with her. She cries daily and just looking at pictures of her, you can clearly see she's struggling. This is not a time for us to be cruel to a family who are suffering. Yes, they were wrong to leave the kids alone but they are paying a terrible price.

I never understood this not showing emotion thing. Kate McCann just suddenly seems more like a mother and less than a PR driven crime suspect.

So now the critics are criticising her for crying? Make up your minds, will you?

It continually saddens and sickens me to see so many negative comments here. No matter what the McCanns do or don't do, there's no pleasing some. One thing I don't understand is why those who complain that the story has run its course keep reading and commenting on it. It's very easy to just go and read something else, is it not? God bless the McCanns and reunite the family soon.

What no one is writing about is IF Madeleine is alive, how is she feeling and is she coping alright in her new environment; if she was kidnapped are her abductors treating her well... none have even mentioned what this child could be going through ... if she is alive... why would Kate McCann wait till today to cry about her daughter? This happened in May and any normal person would have been confined to a straight jacket, as the grief and pain would have been insurmountable... has the nation joined the McCanns with stiff upper lips? Unless experienced words are cheap as one would never ever know how the McCanns feel or how little Madeleine has fared... and the day (if she is alive) that she comes to tell anyone about her ordeal as an older woman, when she might remerge, would anyone believe her? No, she would just be advised to take medication to get rid of negativity. I knew I was going to write today about Madeleine... as I have been there myself. The pain is insurmountable and is only eased through the love of others.

It never ceases to astonish (and sicken) me how cold many people are. I can only assume that all those who say that Kate and Gerry should 'move on' have either not got children or have hearts of stone. I do not have any children yet, but have two beautiful nieces and a nephew who I cannot even contemplate not being in my life. If any of them went missing, I would never stop looking for them and would do anything to make the world aware that they were missing. Kate and Gerry: Never give up hope

Their daughter's fate was sealed the minute the parents embarked on their publicity campaign. Whoever had her would have disposed of her immediately. The parents were very badly advised.

Freddie in Dorset may I remind you that under Portuguese law the McCanns were not allowed to speak out. I personally believe they have gone through enough torture without Maddie to warrant attacks on them for not crying in front of the cameras on previous occasions. The grieving process is complex and added to that they have had to defend themselves to the world against being accused of harming their child. I think initially they were mis-advised on how to approach the media and it backfired and people turned against them as the media was saturated with the story without having actually had any interviews with them personally, due to Portuguese law restrictions.

I have to agree that the tears now seem a little convenient. Where were they months ago when that little girl first disappeared? Where were they during all the other press conferences and public appearances? Now when she is being described as 'cold' suddenly the waterworks are turned on. I really hate to say this but it screams damage control.

is that the only picture they have of kate's uncontrollable weeping?

i thought crying usually involved tears, and i would have thought that if they'd had a picture with tears on it would have been used in the article, which would suggest there weren't any 'tears' to photograph.

I have always believed in her parents, and feel so sorry for Madeleine and her family. I am just glad new initiatives are being taken, thank god. Those who have no better to do than criticise, just mind your own business, as clearly you are not helping, it is just sick.

24-hour hotlines are usually set up within 72 hours after a child is missing. Otherwise they are likely to be unsuccessful.

If anything would draw attention in providing information about Madeleine it would have being the reward money because it is of large quantity. Unless money isn't an issue to the predator.

I trust that the Police will find Madeleine.

There is nothing the public can do now to help the McCanns. Money has been donated for the search and posters have been put up and the British government has seconded an employee to work for the McCanns. The public and the press can do no more. We must move on.

This couple have shown a dignified British reserve. This is normal for people of their background, and the stiff upper lip is a virtue. Why should they be expected to behave like guests on certain daytime chat shows, showing all their emotions in public? Many middle-class people will do anything to avoid showing too much emotion in public.

Am so glad to hear the focus of the case is now firmly back onto finding Madeleine. Her poor, poor parents.

If my son went missing I'd NEVER stop looking for him. I'd do whatever it took to bring him home and I have nothing but admiration for their strength.

All the moronic criticism I'm sure comes from those who have not experienced parenthood firsthand.

Dee from Australia is "saddened" to read so many negative comments? Why? If my daughter went missing, I cannot imagine what I would do. However, what I would NOT do would be to trot out our day to day goings on in a weblog. I wouldn't imply I'm not getting the result I want because either the police are incompetent or because I'm just too beautiful and being penalised for it. Gerry's a surgeon and possibly suffering from that well-known "God complex" but I find both these characters unsavoury and cold. It was reported that on one night, Madeleine was heard crying "Daddy" for hours. How many 2 or 3 year olds call for their fathers, rather than their mothers?

There seem to be a lot of people who thrive on kicking people whilst they are down. I hope all those that appear to enjoy hitting out against the McCanns never experience even half of the pain and suffering they are going through. They are desperate for news of their daughter and due to the strain they are under, they are not always going to do the right thing. As for tears, I have shed many tears over the Madeleine case, all in private - you cannot put on that sort of thing. Give poor Kate McCann a break. None of you can possibly be perfect in your own little lives. If you are fed up with the story, just don't read any of it. There is no book which says you must cry or not cry, or you must do this or that, you can only be. Please leave Gerry and Kate alone, give them support and help, and as my mother always said, if you can't find anything nice to say then it is better not to say anything.

Some of the vicious comments made say more about the writer than it ever will about the McCanns. How you can think of the parents of a missing child so cynically and callously is beyond me. I cannot even imagine the pain they and their daughter must be going through. And as for Andrea from Hungary - when someone thinks Paris Hiltons picture is more important than any missing child - it is a very very sad day for the human race.

In our case, a very discreet press waited until after our beloved daughter's funeral before reporting her death without naming her. So we had what might be called the 'luxury' of saying farewell to our daughter in peace, with the most caring possible nursing staff (and my wife, my son and I felt totally dreadful). That is why I totally admire the raw courage of the McCanns and, even in our position, I can only attempt to understand what they are going through. It is one thing to keep up a face in public; it is quite another to bear each other's unbearable burdens in private. Unless you have lost a child, however deeply sympathetic and compassionate you may be, you are unlikely even to start to understand what it means, even some years afterwards, let alone at the time, and let alone in the nightmare that the McCanns are are going through - and even the word "nightmare" is utterly inadequate.

How can Andrea from Hungry write her heartless comment. These people have lost their child. She's been missing for 6 months! There is probably not a single moment that they are not reminded of their loss. She is everywhere to them, her toys, her clothes, her photos, her empty bed, her hopeful siblings.

The McCanns were quite right to speak out. To these parents the Portuguese police allegation is a major inconvenience, but it is not the main focus. As regards the possibility of the police bringing charges against them for speaking out, I rate the chances of that as zero. The Portuguese police will realise that international opinion would come down on Portugal like a sack of bricks.

I think Andrea from Hungary was commenting on the fact that the McCanns have just become another form of entertainment/celebrity for you people. I think the comment went over most of your heads though.

Thank God for all the people who are writing in with compassion and empathy. I know there are despicable people out there who will hurt a child. What I never imagined were the number of cruel, heartless and unkind people proud to show themselves for what they are. Makes you despair for the human race.

It was distressing to see the McCanns who clearly love their daughter and desperately want her back. Time for all the "arm chair hatred" to stop and for the efforts by the police to be redoubled to find the child.

What is all this emphasis from people for the need to 'show emotion' from Mrs McCann? Do you think this is Jerry Springer or some other 'reality' show? Can none of you see the pain in the faces of these parents whose child has been taken? Do they have to beat their chests and tear our their hair and wail to be 'believed' to be grieving.

To those fickle people... why don't you all dash out a buy an expensive designer handbag or something.

Why are so many people talking so bad about Kate and Gerry? Please, think twice before writing, the only words these parents really need now are our support and help to find the daughter.

I totally agree with what Michelle, Airdrie, Scotland wrote! I knew that the world is full of ignorant and coldhearted people, but it makes me sad to see how many there are for real. I stand behind Madeleines parents 100%, and hope that Maddie will be found and brought safely back home to her parents soon.

They don't look much like a "together" couple to me. Look at the body language. Kate is sobbing, head in hands, and her husband is totally ignoring her.

Why did they not breakdown in tears during the previous interview by Spanish TV? It all seems to be far too orchestrasted this time.

The McCanns should never have taken part in an interview which degraded their plight to the level of a reality TV show with phone in votes.

Trying to establish a persons guilt when analysing their every word when they are traumatized and under extreme pressure is indeed a cruel sport.

..."it is not about us. It is about Madeleine."

Exactly. So how did this story go so far off the rails? It seems to be setting a new standard in news reporting, spinning the story of a missing child into a dramatic saga with all the twists and turns you'd expect to find in a TV soap.

I have got more and more annoyed at the unfounded speculation, and accusations that have been plastered on the front pages of some newspapers against her parents, since Maddie disappeared. Lets have facts, not spurious guess-work! How they must be hurting!
Stop all the media trash and get out there and find her!

I can't believe the coldness of some of you people - saying now she's crying as if on cue. When my father died it took me over 6 months until I was able to shed a tear. Was it because I didn't love him? No, it was because at first I was in shock, then denial and I was so afraid that if I started to breakdown that I wouldn't be able to stop. Not everyone is wired the same way, some of us keep grief bottled up and we try hard to stay in control. Sorry if that doesn't accommodate you lot, but the idea of weeping all over the place in public is not something I would want to do. At least I was able to grieve in private, this poor couple have to do it under the glare of the media.

I sincerely hope Madeleine is found safe and well. The day she is, there will an awful lot of people who will be hanging their heads in shame. Whatever happened to 'innocent until proven guilty' and what ever happened to compassion. This whole sorry episode is so sad. What makes me even sadder is the just how many arrogant, judgemental people there are in the world. Let the person who has never made a mistake throw the first stone.

It's not about kicking Kate and Gerry down, but people are entitled to their own opinions.

I sincerely hope that Maddie is found alive and reunited with her family, but I have always been astonished that her parents and their professional friends saw fit to leave their young children alone, in unlocked apartments on holiday.

The devastated parents of poor little Madeleine must be frantic with worry, verging on dispair and I for one feel truly sorry for them and their missing daughter. The nasty people who gloat on their agony would, I have no doubt, have been comfortable and enjoyed sitting knitting as the guillotine fell. They disgust me.

These articles shouldn't be printed. There is no proof against the McCanns and until there is this is no help to anyone. It's a hindrance to finding Maddie whether alive or dead.

All the malicious comments against the McCanns are never coming from people who have experienced something even close to what they have experienced since May 3rd - a missing child and all the terryfing scenarios that come with that. The amount of mean comments are incredible and makes one to lose faith in the goodness of the human race.
Kate and Gerry and their families and friends are doing what they can and what they know best to get their daughter back. Sorry some of you perfect creatures who are eager to critisize each of their step don't approve.

This darling little girl is still missing and needs to be found, a lot of precious time has been wasted because of pure speculation and just opinion, and just like "belly buttons" we all have one but that doesn't make it correct. Evidence is what is needed here not guess work.

Stop the negativity, start to help and encourage the McCanns with the search for Madeleine as she is still out there somewhere and the publicity should not stop until she has been found.

Hopefully the loss of Madeleine has highlighted the plight of all the other missing children, never forget that.

Madeleine needs to be found... now!

While I have every sympathy with the McCanns and do not believe they had anything to do with their daughter's disappearance, other than perhaps by being careless in leaving their children unattended, I do wish they would shut up and stop giving these interviews. Every time they open their mouths they put their foot in it, and none of this helps either them or the search for Madeleine.

Looking at Kate McCann in the news today and hearing her last night when she said "as Madeleine's mummy" just breaks your heart. I have children of my own and cannot even begin to imagine the anguish this family are going through. It's time for us all to say enough is enough, let these people find their daughter and bring her home. God knows what Madeleine has been going through. We all need to refocus and start looking again. Madeleine needs our help more than her parents need our malicious comments. What is the human race coming to?

God bless you Madeleine and may you return home soon.

I feel so much for them, I know its no comparision but my cat has been missing for 2 days and I feel sick and incomplete and so sad without her, she was part of our family, so I can only imagine how they feel with a missing child. I hope she will be home soon to her mummy and daddy.

This poor couple are being dissected to the nth degree. The comments and accusations only expose the hideous "lynch mob mentality". We need to uphold the principle of innocent until proven guilty. Stay strong Kate and Gerry you will prevail!

I would venture that 90% of the world would not behave as nobly as these poor parents in the case of such a horror story. If I had been falsely accused, bugged, and had my every word and action twisted against me, I would tell the Mrs to turn off the mike too! These are brave people. Help them, or if you can't do that, then don't hinder them.

PF from Essex - also remember that Madeleine's parents are also victims in this. They have not only lost a precious daughter, they have also had to endure a vicious smear campaign by the Portuguese police and media. They will never be the same again! Is it not true that any parent who has lost a child does not grieve for the loss of that child? How can anyone say such a stupid and callous thing? Someone, somewhere knows something and they should come forward.
