Gordon Brown has raised concerns about the investigation into Madeleine McCann's disappearance with his Portuguese counterpart.

Mr Brown discussed the police inquiry with the premier Jose Socrates during private talks in Lisbon, where the pair are attending the EU summit.

Mr Brown said he wanted to be assured "that the police authorities are taking the actions that are necessary and there's proper cooperation between the British and Portuguese police".

The pair previously discussed the case in July, when Mr Socrates assured Mr Brown "everything possible" was being done to find the missing four-year-old.

Mr Brown's involvement in the case has sparked resentment in Portugal in the past.

One detective accused parents Gerry and Kate McCann of creating "constant interruptions and distractions" after it emerged they had been keeping him personally updated on developments over Madeleine, who went missing in the Algarve resort of Praia da Luz on May 3.

The policeman said: "It is amazing to me that people in high positions are getting involved. I can't think of any case in Portugal where this has happened."

A source in the Portugese police admitted yesterday they have no evidence against the McCanns, who are still official suspects.

A high-ranking detective in the investigation told the Portuguese newspaper 24 Horas: "The truth is, nothing which allows us to make a definite accusation against the McCanns has yet emerged."

It also emerged yesterday that Mrs McCann is having haunting visions of Madeleine at night.

Her mother Susan Healey said: "She told me she was unable to sleep a couple of nights ago and I said, 'Did the twins wake you up?' She said, 'No, Madeleine came'."

British people would have been outraged if the Brazilian President Mr. Lula had "grilled" Tony Blair on the murder of a Brazilian citizen by British Police. How dare anybody question the integrity of your forces. Now we know better.

How strange government ministers get involved. Never been heard of before in the case of a missing child. Something smells of cover up here. Embarrasment for the government perhaps and all the people drawn in by the McCann scam.
Meanwhile the search seems to have drawn to a close... no more balloons, no more ribbons, what about the fund will that money be returned?

I can't believe that once again politicians become involved in this case. It is not normal! It doesn't seem ethical, either. Many parents with missing children will quote Geoge Orwell: "We are all equal, but some are (much) more equal than others". Why don't the parents demand to be questionned by the police until cleared?

I do not think G Brown is doing this because the McCanns have connections; there is widespread concern (due to the constant media claims and police leaks concerning the parents) that a potential miscarriage of justice be avoided.

This is important since so many Brits holiday in Portugal. If someone has abducted her, what about the next time? Will the mistakes in the golden hours after the reporting be made again? Will the Portugese police continue to line their pockets by making scurrilous accusations to the press?

Does Mr. Brown really have sufficient time being Prime Minister to discuss this issue during his visit to Portugal as he apparently had also done in the past? Although I do not minimise the tragedy of a missing child I would have thought as appointed leader he had more important and urgent matters on his agenda to consider and take action on.

Just how much spin can be put on this case? Too much time talking and not enough time actively searching or looking for traces of Madeleine. There is a job to be done so just get on with it and stop the endless witterings from the parents and so called 'sources'.

It still amazes me the interest this case is getting from people in 'high places' as has been said on here many times children are going missing almost daily and it doesn't get a mention in a daily paper let alone intervention from the PM! I do hope this isn't just Gordon on the make for some 'brownie' points after giving a 'snap' election a quicker body swerve than Jason Robinson due to falling popularity or is he getting advice from PR Expert Clarence Mitchell?

More publicity seeking from the King of Spin. Not a peep about real issues going on in Britain that he is responsible for, such as the house price issue, Northern rock, credit card debt etc. I am sure that there have been many more children missing in the UK this year - not a word.

The catastrophic mistakes made by the Portuguese police in this enquiry have been evident for the whole world to see and were perfectly summed up by last night's documentary. Every British police and forensic expert has criticised the work done based on fact not some form of prejudice, why on earth should Gordon Brown choose not to listen to those whose opinion he would normally trust without question?

Government's primary duty is to protect its citizen's rights and welfare both at home and abroad. The previous officer's attempt to frame the McCanns and the smear campaign, had the makings of a very nasty international incident. I hope ministers and diplomats can sort that out while the new team find Madeleine. This family needs justice.

I have full sympathy for Kate McCann's mother and father, but her mother is doing her no favours telling us that Kate cries hysterically twice a day and has haunting visions of Madeline at night. It is only reinforcing the feelings of most people that she is unfit to be a mother. Gordon Brown should not be involved in any way, I think a lot of people that are in influential positions will end up ruing the day that they heard of the McCanns. The truth will out.

It`s very important for Kate McCann to pay attention to her dreams. If she is having dreams about Maddie it may be a spirit visitation, or equally a mind to mind telepathic communication, I myself receive information through precognitive dreamstate, it's interpreting dreams correctly especially the lucid ones just prior to awakening.

Gordon Brown is doing his job. There are numerous cases where governments have intervened abroad in cases involving a citizen. Sometimes it is known to the public. Sometimes it is not. All emotions and all the misinformation surrounding this case calls for it.

I cant see what help Mr. Brown is going to be in this situation, everyone can jump on the bandwagon but it means nothing. A little innocent girl is still missing. Money nor conscious has provoked the abductor into returning Maddie so I very much doubt it if Mr. Brown will.

I'm sorry Julia in Scotland - you speak for yourself. "Most people" think Kate McCann is an unfit mother? I don't think so. People want it all ways, she is cold and calculating first, then when it appears she is distraught and upset about her daughter's disappearance she is castigated for being unable to cope. Yes, her mother needs to keep quiet on the subject but it's a mother's natural instinct to protect her child, no matter how old that child is. There is NOTHING to say the McCanns have done anything other than be stupid about security during their holiday. I've lived in a foreign holiday resort and I've see it over and over again, they are not the first and will certainly not be the last. Gordon Brown is showing due concern for British citizens subjected to a smear campaign by foreign press. And so he should. Anyone should be able to expect that - including you.
