EXPRESS: MONDAY 26 NOVEMBER 2007

The Daily Express, Mon 26 November 2007

PORTUGUESE TEAM

KATE and Gerry McCann wrecked the chances of solving the mystery of their daughter's disappearance by destroying evidence at their holiday apartment, a senior policeman has claimed.

The Portuguese officer, one of the first detectives on the scene after Madeleine's disappearance, said the flat was such a mess it 'looked like there had been an earthquake' and any clues had been 'contaminated' by people trampling in and out.

Countering criticisms of the original police investigation he said: 'When we arrived at the scene, it was as if there had been an earthquake in the apartment.

'Everything had been turned over and there were more than 10 people there touching everything. How could the
evidence not be contaminated'

'Of course, we isolated the scene, but a great deal had already been touched.'

In an interview with Portuguese daily 24 Horas, he said gathering
evidence at the apartment had not been a priority at first, as they were initially investigating an abduction.

However, as the police investigation increasingly turned towards the theory that Madeleine had died in the apartment, they found
evidence at the scene had been destroyed.

He said: 'We set out with the presumption that the little girl had disappeared. Only later was the investigation steered towards a possible homicide or abduction.

'The time that was lost was fatal but the McCanns allowed the destruction of
evidence which would be fundamental for the clarification of what happened.'

The comments come as it emerged the Portuguese are sending a scientific team to the UK to conduct their own analysis of DNA
evidence taken from the McCanns' holiday apartment and their hire car.

Forensic officers from the Policia Judiciaria are to travel to the Birmingham lab to be taken through what the British team has already done and to be given access to the samples to carry out their own tests.
