The mother of Robert Murat has dismissed claims that
her son was involved in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.
Jenny Murat said he was with her the whole evening of May 3 when the
four-year-old went missing. And she also accused three friends of Gerry and
Kate McCann of lying.
Russell O'Brien, Rachael Oldfield and Fiona Payne, who were members of the
so-called Tapas Nine, reportedly claimed they saw Mr Murat near the apartment
on the night of May 3.
But Mrs Murat, speaking publicly for the first time, said her son spent the
entire evening with her 'I just don't know why they are lying,' she tells
tonight's BBC's Panorama programme, adding: 'On May 3 I'd been out taking the
dogs out, which I do every single night of my life. I got home about eight o'clock
and Robert was already there and he was in all of the evening.'
Gerry McCann's sister, Philomena, told the programme of hearing his wife
'screaming' while talking with her lawyer shortly before she was named a
suspect.
She said she was on the phone to her sister, Trish, who was at the apartment,
when their conversation was interrupted.
'It was about three in the morning and Trish ran out and I could hear her say
to me, “Hold on, it's Kate”.
'She ran out with the mobile and there I am listening to Kate screaming at the
lawyer “No... No”, and just the emotion, her disgust. The anger was palpable,
you could feel it.'
Meanwhile, it also emerged that a new 'witness' claims he saw Madeleine in
central Portugal
two days after she disappeared.
News of the latest sighting came ahead of an interview on US network CBS,
in which Francisco Marco, head of the Spanish private detective agency hired by
the McCanns, said he believed he would find the
four-year-old.
The McCanns' spokesman, Clarence Mitchell, said: 'He's 100 per cent certain
that she's alive and believes that they are “very, very close” to finding the
kidnapper.'
