Robert Murat: 'breathless' and 'a little excited'

Madeleine McCann suspect Robert Murat was sweating, "breathless" and "a little excited" at the Ocean Club resort in Praia da Luz the day after the four-year-old went missing, a key witness said yesterday.

Bridget O'Donnell, who became friends with Kate and Gerry McCann while staying at the same complex, broke her silence to declare that although Kate and Gerry McCann made a "disastrous decision" in leaving Madeleine alone, they are innocent of any crime.

She described Gerry McCann was "relaxed" about leaving his children alone in their holiday apartment the night Madeleine disappeared, and told of the Portuguese detectives' incompetence, saying that they did not even know what Madeleine looked like the day after she disappeared.

Yesterday, for the first time, Miss O'Donnell described a crucial encounter when her partner, TV producer Jeremy Wilkins, spoke to Gerry McCann during the hour when Madeleine vanished.

Gerry and Kate McCann: 'relaxed and friendly'

The cardiologist was on his way back to the resort's tapas restaurant at 8.30pm after checking on his three children when he bumped into Mr Wilkins, who was taking his baby son out in a buggy to try to get him to sleep before spending the evening in the family's accommodation.

"The two men stopped to have a chat," she wrote in The Guardian.

"They talked about daughters, fathers, families.

"Gerry was relaxed and friendly.

"They discussed their baby-sitting dilemmas at the resort and Gerry said that he and Kate would have stayed in too if they had not been on holiday in a group."

Encounter: Jeremy Wilkins spoke to Gerry McCann

Her account goes against the Portuguese police theory that Mr McCann was somehow involved in his daughter's death and had left her body in the apartment at that time.

The chance meeting on the night Madeleine vanished has been subject to endless speculation and is critical in confirming the timing of the McCanns' movements.

Miss O'Donnell, who worked as a producer on BBC1's Crimewatch, said she "admired" the McCanns for being comfortable enough to leave their children alone in their apartment as they ate at a tapas restaurant nearby.

"I admired them, in a way, for not being paranoid parents, but I decided that our apartment was too far off even to contemplate it," she said.

Her comments will be a welcome boost for the McCanns who have suffered a growing backlash in recent days from the mayor of Praia da Luz, where posters have been removed of the missing girl.

Miss O'Donnell was staying with her partner, her three-year- old daughter and nine-month- old baby son in their apartment a block away from the McCanns".

She said: "Privately I was glad we didn't get their apartment.

"It was on a corner by the road and people could see in. They were exposed."

She described the dilemma parents faced when arranging childcare at the resort.

Although the Ocean Club had a 'sit-in' babysitting service, she said it was expensive, highly in demand and parents had to book well in advance.

Alternatively, children could be taken to the kiddie club which also ran a babysitting service.

But Miss O'Donnell said that when she left her children there, the sitter called to say one was crying.

Madeleine vanished on May 3, turning the McCann's  lives to horror

The couple had to leave their meal unfinished to collect their two children and return to their apartment.

On May 3, the night Madeleine disappeared, Miss O'Donnell said they decided to stay in with their children.

She said: "We ate, drank wine, watched a DVD then went to bed.

"On the ground floor, a completely catastrophic event was taking place.

"On the fourth floor of the next block, we were completely oblivious."

At 1am they were woken with the news by a friend of the McCanns helping with the search .

The next day the couple spoke to police who were being aided by Robert Murat acting as a translator.

"The translator had a squint and sweated slightly," said Miss O'Donnell.

"He was breathless, perhaps a little excited."

Miss O'Donnell blasted the police investigation, saying that officers did not have a notebook and only wrote their details on a scrap of paper.

An officer also failed to recognise a photocopied picture of Madeleine distributed by the McCanns' search party, which he mistook for a picture of Miss O'Donnell's daughter.

Describing Kate McCann as "calm, still, quietly beautiful" and Gerry as "confident, proud, silly, strong", she said the couple were physically transformed when their daughter went missing.

"The physical transformation of these two human beings was sickening . . . Kate's back and shoulders, her hands, her mouth had reshaped themselves into the angular manifestation of a silent scream,' she said.

"Gerry was upright, his lips now drawn into a thin, impenetrable line."

Though they were not part of the McCanns' group of friends - whom they nicknamed "the Doctors" - Mr Wilkins had previously played tennis with Mr McCann.

Miss O'Donnell said: "Throughout all this I have believed that Gerry and Kate McCann are innocent.

"There were no drug-fuelled 'swingers' on our holiday - there was a bunch of ordinary parents worrying about sleep patterns.

"None of us imagined we were being watched. One group made a disastrous decision; Madeleine was vulnerable and was chosen.

"But in the face of such desperate audacity, it could have been any one of us."

Three days after Madeleine's disappearance, the couple left the resort.

British police later took a statement from Mr Wilkins, but she said Portuguese police never bothered.

Miss O'Donnell added: "My heart goes out to them, Kate and Gerry, the couple we remember from our Portuguese holiday.

"They had a beautiful daughter Madeleine, who played and danced with ours at the kiddie club. That's who we remember."

More speculation based on nothing in particular other than this person became friendly with them and thought they were nice people. That isn't enough to decide innocent or guilt. By the way, love the fact she admired their decision to leave three young and vulnerable children alone at night in an unlocked apartment near two roads as it meant they were not 'paranoid parents.'

Yes always a very good reason for leaving your 3-year-old kid alone.

Certainly put my mind to rest about the question why anybody would leave their kids alone in the first place. Now I understand, a normal thing any parent would do is it not, being on holiday with friends justifies leaving your kid alone... makes perfect sense to me... and yes they are innocent and have no blame what so ever in the whole case... being on holiday with friends and all that.

Once again, on what grounds is the assumption being made that Madeleine was abducted'

Is it likely that the same evening that Madeleine disappeared, Gerry McCann would have discussed the difficulties of getting a babysitter and also, that had he not been with a group of friends he wouldn't have left his children alone' Up until this alleged conversation, the McCanns have asserted they were responsible parents and their daughter could have disappeared even had they been in the flat.

Lastly, is Ms. O'Donnell qualified to criticise the police' At the beginning of the enquiry, before the McCanns were made suspects, they were full of praise for the police.

You can wrap it up in as many flowery words as you like and attribute them to 'respected' witnesses but the fact remains - they left three small babies to fend for themselves in a dark and strange apartment. By their own timeline for May 3rd, they were only with the children for breakfast, 2 hours over dinner and then to put them to bed between 6/7.00pm. The rest of the time was for themselves, as it would appear to have been for the whole holiday. The children spent more time in kids club than they did with the parents on this holiday. Yet, we must believe Madeleine had her 'best day ever' on May 3rd. Are they worthy of admiration' Maybe by the legion of nanny-hiring parents, whose lives are 'too busy' to be spent with their offspring.

Her interview - probably ghosted - is interesting because she describes how her partner carried their child in a blanket on May 2- as described by Jane Tanner re May 3 - and does not confirm that Madeleine was seen on May 3 at all. Intriguing.

It's a very touching and convincing article, but the question that bothers me is if you're going to a be a lazy parent and leave your kids unattended than why did'nt they use one of these walkie talkie mobile baby monitors. They are wealthy people and they only cost £20. I raised five kids and never have I left them alone. Mind you I also have not been out for a drink with freinds since 1995 either!

You read the Daily Mail just like I do so chances are you too are probably middle class. This woman is merely saying that you could not "act out" the level of distress Mrs McCann displayed as one human might observe of another human going through a traumatic experience.

But that's the whole point... at this resort there are NO babysitting dilemmas - it's all laid on for you - either evening crèche facilities (with beds for the younger children) and staffed by the same nannies who look after the children during the day, or one of the nannies in your room babysitting the whole time that you are 'out'.

There was NO need to go out and leave all their children unattended.

Some crimes are never solved. I have little, hang on, no sympathy for the parents, only for that poor child. No amount of PR or spin like this will ever change my opinion, I detest the way that this group of people think that the general public are stupid, all they are doing are deflecting their own faults as parents. Which is exactly what a lot of people have said right from the beginning. Going out socialising with their friends was far more important than caring for their babies and is now, allegedly, their very own version of events!

Isn't it funny how all of these stories come out when the McCanns are getting negative publicity' It looks to me as if 'McCann PR Inc.' have a whole stash of these to bring out when either things are looking bleak for the couple, or the Portuguese police start talking about closing the case. So being on holiday and having nights out with friends is their first priority, had they been alone they would have stayed in with their children. Well, more a witness to the Mccanns priorities and actions, not to their innocence I would have thought.

Rosemary C. I do hope they find the little girl not her body, but I will not make any apology for how I feel about their (the Mccann's) behaviour.

Ms O'Donnell has just reiterated that they left them alone to be with their friends. It now appears that they told people their children were alone - who might have been listening to these conversations'

If I remember correctly, Mr Wilkin spoke to Mr Mccann on his return trip from - looking in the room (he couldn't see Madeleine because of the position of her bed). The previous person only listened at the door so Madeleine could in fact have been gone over an hour when Mr Wilkins was talking to Mr Mccann. Surely that isn't proof of their innocence!

Sorry, I didn't really want to comment on this any more but honestly speaking, how can you ADMIRE parents for leaving three children aged under four alone in an apartment with the door unlocked' It is a misuse of the trust which children deserve to have in their parents and if anything good can come out of this whole sorry affair, it is that stricter laws should be made regarding childcare and that more parents are made aware of the dangers of leaving children alone and the responsibility which being a parent brings with it.

I agree for all you people who are too quick to respond with negative comments, this media scramble has turned us into non-compassionate people. For god's sake this little girl could be out there somewhere are we are doing nothing as a nation to help or assist by placing vile comments on these forums/boards.

For the love of god, have compassion at least at this time of year if not for the parents, for MADDY.

Whatever they have done makes them human, leaving their kids may be unforgiveable but they are still having to spend every day and every night wondering what happened to their daughter, where she is, what she has been through and whether she is even alive. Does anyone honestly think that they would have left them if they had thought for one second she was anything less than 100% safe' No evidence links them to her disappearance and this story only serves to reinforce people's opinion of them - decent family people who took a calculated risk. It is easy to blame them and forget that some sick evil twisted soul watched them and took their child from them for god knows what reason.

I think it is very suspicious that so many people are suddenly emerging from the woodwork, Ms O'Donnell being the latest, to collaborate the McCanns story, and to create the impression that Robert Murat is indeed involved somehow in Madeleine's disappearance. I have just finished reading the full version of this story on the Guardian Website and wonder why Ms O'Donnell is suddenly talking about this now, after so many months have passed. What exactly is the point' She certainly seems to be seeking publicity, almost as much as the McCanns themselves. I found her comment, that she admired the McCanns for leaving their children alone, beyond belief. I really think it is time parents realised that when they have children it DOES change your life, and if you wish to carry on as before, then really you should not have children at all.

Yes Carol S, Southampton, we all make mistakes. There have been a couple of times when I look back and my blood runs cold at decisions I have made and what the consequences could have been. However, I believe if I had made such a dire mistake as the one the McCanns made I would have handled the consequence differently. I would not have played about on websites, mucked about visiting the Pope, employed a PR guru, scarpered from Portugal at the first signs of things getting a bit hot, or employed a vastly expensive and apparently useless detective agency, AND I would have answered the questions that the Police had asked.

The only thing crucial about Mr Wilkins' presence on the path that night was that it cast doubt on Jane Tanner's claim to have seen a man carrying a pyjama-clad child hurrying through the resort. Mr Wilkins made it clear months ago in a statement to police that he had seen neither Jane Tanner nor the supposed abductor on the path that night. This was backed up by a statement from a second witness. Interestingly Ms O'Donnell makes no mention of this in her piece.

Also as a producer on Crimewatch, Ms O'Donnell should know better than to form an opinion of the possible innocence or guilt of an individual based on no more than a handful of conversations.

Well said Steve Jones from Bristol, you speak the truth and offer an explaination as to why so many absentee parents empathise with the McCanns.

Ms O'Donnell recalled ADMIRING the McCanns for leaving their children to sleep in their apartment as they ate at a tapas restaurant nearby - and this lady worked on BBC1's Crimewatch! Unbelievable!

She of all people, familiar with all manner of crimes which are covered on the show she worked on, should have been outraged, or at least wary of the safety and security of such an arrangement.

I find the whole tone of this 'new' witness incredible.

Apart from the obvious observations made by other posters - it's worrying that this 'witness' tries to insinuate something about Robert Murat and implicate him in some way.

Why should his squint be a factor' Or the fact he was perspiring' Why mention he looked like a boy she knew at school who was bullied' What sort of scenario is she trying to set up here' And yes - I believe 100% this person is trying to create a scenario.

It all sounds desperately fishy to me.

The McCanns felt safe in their holiday environment with their friends, all of whom had children. It is monstrous to even think that they killed Madeleine. It is known that Portugal has paedophile rings and these people are powerful predators. The authorities in Portugal cover it up because it will ruin their tourist trade!
