THE detective who led the failed attempts to find Madeleine McCann has written a controversial new book about the case, bringing fresh anguish for her parents.

HEARTBREAK: Portuguese detective Goncalo Amaral won his libel appeal against the McCanns

Goncalo Amaral revealed he has completed the work, which forensically re-examines the timeline of her disappearance, and is now seeking to publish it.

Mr Amaral co-ordinated the original investigation in Portugal but went on to publish a book making unfounded allegations against Maddie’s parents Kate and Gerry.

The couple fiercely rebuked his claims and the book was withdrawn – but last month Mr Amaral won an Appeal Court case, allowing the book to be published.

SETBACK: The McCanns plan to take the case to the Supreme Court

SUSPICIONS: Goncalo Amaral has penned a second book about the disappearance

Now he says he has penned a second book about the disappearance which he is planning to publish.

The move will anger Kate and Gerry, who have spent the last nine years searching for their daughter who vanished on May 3, 2007, then aged three.

The McCanns are taking the case to the Supreme Court in Lisbon in a bid to to overturn the appeal ruling on the first book.
