LONDON (AFP) - A businessman has offered a million pound reward for information leading to the return of Madeleine McCann.

The Times said Stephen Winyard, who owns a Scottish health spa, made the offer earlier this week.

Madeleine, who turns four on Saturday, disappeared from her room in a seaside resort near the village of Praia da Luz in the Algarve on May 3 as her parents ate dinner in a nearby restaurant.

Winyard, a 57-year-old father-of-three who lives in Monaco, said he was moved to come forward by photographs of the toddler's anguished parents.

"There but for the grace of God go all of us," he told The Times.

"When I saw their faces, I felt frustrated that no one else had yet come forward offering a substantial reward, and so felt compelled to do so myself."

"I have already spoken to my financial advisers and can get hold of the money very quickly. If the offer is deemed acceptable by Madeleine's family and the Portuguese police, I hope that it might help the situation and lead to her rescue and the arrests of anyone responsible."

Premiership footballers have added their voices to calls for information leading to the safe return of the toddler.

Earlier this week, Manchester United's Portugal winger Cristiano Ronaldo appealed for information in English and Portuguese.

And Chelsea's England captain John Terry and Portugal defender Paulo Ferreira also made a statement on the London club's behalf.

"We are all devastated to hear that Maddie was abducted. Our thoughts and feelings go to her parents and family," Terry said, while Ferreira repeated his words in Portuguese.
