(TRAVPR.COM) PORTUGAL - February 25th, 2012 - A very unusual new book about the Algarve has just been published. It is certainly not your average tourist guide. It gives a deeper understanding and fascinating insight into the region by focusing on the remarkable array of foreign cultures and outstanding individual personalities who have visited or inhabited the south of Portugal over the years.  It takes in the whole period from ancient times to the present day.

The book is called People in a Place Apart. It is by Irish journalist and author Len Port who lives in the Algarve. This new non-fiction title is available exclusively from Amazon as an eBook.

People in a Place Apart contains intimate portrayals of royalty, political heads of state, explorers, outstanding warriors on the high seas and in the air, celebrated writers and stars of sports and entertainment. The famous characters included are as diverse as Henry the Navigator and Henry Cooper, Vasco da Gama, George Galloway and Paul McCartney.

The early chapters deal with people during momentous periods in the Algarve’s history, from the first Phoenician explorers and the Moorish occupation to nationhood and the Age of Discovery. The later chapters consider the movers and shakers from the Swinging Sixties to our economically troubled times right now

While much of People in a Place Apart is about the famous and influential, parts of it dwell on villains and victims, as well as infamous mysteries, the disappearance of Madeleine McCann included.

A print edition of the book may become available later in the year, but for now it is only available as an eBook that can be read on Kindle devices and Kindle apps for iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, PC, Mac, Blackberry, and Android-based devices.

If you haven’t got a Kindle, you can get a free peek into the book on your computer.  Just type the title - People in a Place Apart – into the search box of an amazon website.

When you see the front cover of the book, click on to it. Then you’ll see an invitation to ‘Look Inside’. Click on that. There it is!

The three main websites - depending on whether you want to see the book priced in euros, pounds or dollars: amazon.com/ portugal; amazon.co.uk; amazon.com.
