Still hope: Kate flashes a smile as she crosses the finishing line

Kate and Gerry McCann ran a 10k race yesterday with a photo of missing daughter Madeleine on their vests and the words Never Give Up.

They took part in Kate’s home city Liverpool days after the fifth anniversary of Madeleine’s disappearance during a holiday in Portugal.

Kate, 44, and Gerry, 43, said last week they were more hopeful than ever their girl would be found after a review by Scotland Yard identified new lines of inquiry.

Speaking on the fifth anniversary of her disappearance, Gerry said: “It does feel now finally someone in the authorities, British authorities, are actually trying to find Madeleine.

“I’m more confident now than at any point for the last four and a half years we will find her and who is responsible for taking her.

“The resource that is being directed, the expertise and the determination that the team is showing – they really want to get to the bottom of this.”

Kate added: “We have been asked many times, ‘How is it five years on?’ Well in actual fact it’s better than it was a year ago.

"That’s true. I feel so much more positive and hopeful than a year ago.”
