Confusion over Madeleine 'suspect'

The hunt for missing three-year-old Madeleine McCann is shrouded in confusion amid reports questioning claims made by Portuguese police that they have a suspect.

On Saturday, officers in the Algarve resort of Praia Da Luz said they had "evidence" to indicate a kidnap and a "profile" for a suspect, and that they believed she is alive.

But Portuguese newspaper 24 Horas reported that the image which the police had put together was based only on the rear view of a man seen with a child in the area.

The three-year-old went missing from the family's holiday apartment where she was sleeping with her younger brother and sister, twins Amelie and Sean, while their parents - Gerry and Kate - had dinner nearby on Thursday night.

The Portuguese newspaper said: "The person was seen from behind, we see more of the back of the head and the hair rather than the actual features in the portrait of the man that was seen with a child that night."

The newspaper did not cite a source other than to say "24 Horas reports".

Portuguese police have refused to confirm any details of the portrait.

Police spokesman Guilhermino Encarnacao had earlier refused to elaborate on their evidence "to safeguard the child's life".

Last night a group of 21 villagers including a handful of children met the McCanns in their apartment to say the Rosary together. The group spent about 45 minutes with the couple, both doctors, from Rothley, Leicestershire.

It came on the day Madeleine's mother Kate knelt and wept in church as she prayed for her safe return.
