EEF HOOS (61) Year 2007
A Dutch criminal who cremates dead animals in a furnace behind his house told today how detectives had questioned him about the Madeleine McCann case. Eef Hoos, 61, who spent almost eight years in jail for planting bombs in the Netherlands, was repeatedly asked by police if he had met Maddy's parents. Hoos, who lives in a rundown but heavily fortified villa in remote mountains in the Algarve said officers had been taking photographs in his girlfriend's garden yesterday morning. He went to his local police HQ to confront officers about the photographs, only to find himself asked about the McCann case. Police inspected his incinerator and Hoos was ordered to attend the police HQ for more questions.

KATLEEN SAMPERMANS, JOLIEN HOUBRECH, SJANNEKE and ED HOFSTEDE (33, 21, 4 and ?? respectively)  Year 2007
Katleen Sampermans, a child therapist alerted police after saying she was "100% sure" she had seen the four-year-old at a restaurant in the Flemish town of Tongeren, not far from the Dutch border, on July 28. Student Jolien Houbrech, 21, was working at the De Pauze restaurant in the Belgian border town of Tongeren on Wednesday when a Dutch man and an English woman arrived with a small child. She confirmed the sighting. Police treated the report seriously, and released a computer image of the man - believed to be Belgium, aged about 40, and spoke Flemish with a Dutch accent. His female companion was British. DNA tests were carried out on the cup the young girl used at the restaurant. A nationwide alert was issued for the car the couple fled in, a black Volvo with Belgian number plates beginning with VUV. The child was identified as Sjanneke Hofstede who was on an access visit with her father, a Belgian man from the town of Hoogstraten, and his Polish girlfriend. Sjanneke was a little ill-at-ease because it was the first time that she had met her father’s girlfriend.

GAIL COOPER (50) Year 2007
Gail Cooper, a community healthcare co-ordinator from Newark, Nottinghamshire, was staying 600 yards from the McCann family's Portuguese holiday flat when she had three separate encounters with a moustachioed man. Two of her sightings were also witnessed by her husband, and a 12-year-old girl has also come forward to back up her story. Gail Cooper first spotted the man on the beach at Praia da Luz on April 20 at about 1pm when she went for lunch with friends at the Paraiso Restaurant. Later that day, at around 4pm, Mrs Cooper was startled to find the stranger knocking on the front door of her holiday villa. He said he was collecting for an orphanage in nearby Espiche that was caring for three children whose parents had recently been killed in an accident on the main coast road. Mrs Cooper saw the man a third time, two days later on April 22, as she lunched with her husband Jonathan at Bar Habana on the beach. Based on Mrs Cooper's evidence an FBI-trained police artist produced the first detailed likenesses of the alleged stalker. On 19th January, armed with the new pictures, detectives in Portugal and Britain were joined by Interpol in a desperate race to trace the suspect as Jane Tanner has now told the McCanns: "The man in the new suspect picture strongly resembles the person I saw on May 3rd." The man is 38 to 45, with sallow skin, lank dark hair, distinctive droopy moustache, large teeth and speaks broken English. "This man was very unpleasant and creepy. Mrs Cooper said, "He wasn't Portuguese—I think he was North African, either Tunisian or Moroccan."

MELISSA FIERING (18 ) Year 2007
Melissa Fiering, a student, claims she saw Madeleine McCann in a cafe on 15th February. She described the dark-skinned male to sketch artist Emre Altin, 28, exclusively for the The Daily Mirror. Speaking at her home in Nijmegen, Holland the travel and tourism student said of the police-style e-fit: "This is definitely an accurate likeness of the man I saw. I'd recognise him straight away if the police found him." Melissa said the person she saw in Montpellier, southern France, was about 6ft, in his late 30s, possibly Algerian, with slightly receding hair and a distinctive sharp jaw line. He wore a black leather jacket and "looked quite rough". French police viewed the CCTV videos and concluded that the child was not Madeleine.

DANILO CHEMELLO and AURORA VAZ (61 and 54) Year 2007
Italian Danilo Chemello and his Portuguese lover Aurora Pereira Vaz are believed to have demanded money from the McCanns for information on Madeleine’s whereabouts. They were arrested in Sotogrande, Spain (a popular resort east of Gibraltar) on 1st July. It was reported by Spanish media that the pair may have been attempting to extort money from the McCann family by pretending to have key information about the child's whereabouts. Danilo Chemello had an outstanding international arrest warrant outstanding which was issued by France. It is understood that Chemello had been sentenced to three years' prison in France, but had gone on the run. The operation for arrest was led by agents from Spain's anti-kidnapping group of the specialised and violent crime unit.

MELISSA LITTLE
Melissa Little is an FBI-accredited police artist who was employed by the McCanns to do the early drawings of the faceless man carrying a child in pyjamas based on Tanner's statements and then to develop the image of the moustachioed man seen by Gail Cooper. The drawings, including that of the moustachioed man walking, wearing a safari jacket and light-coloured trousers, have been passed to the police. The distribution of the artist's impression, created by Melissa Little, spoke volumes not only about the family's resolve, but their frustration with the official investigation. Dr Graham Davies and Melissa Little produced a 1990 study: “Drawing on Memory: exploring the expertise of the police artist.” which examined the different approaches of identi-KIT (where the witness focuses on a face feature-by feature) and the holistic approach of composite face drawing which Melissa Little favours, believing that this method produces more accurate facial likeness. Little’s article “Forensic art: a Police Artist's experience” was published in the “Journal of Visual Communication in Medicine”, Volume 14, Issue 1 in 1991.

BERNARD ALAPETITE (aka “El Francés” - "The Frenchman")
Bernard Alapetite is the person that Antonio Toscano believes kidnapped Madeleine. Toscano said The Frenchman was white, thinly built and around 5ft 7in tall. He has blond short hair and is in his late 40s and has three known convictions for paedophile offences. Mr Alapetite claimed he was in Paris, on May 3, and has a judge, the bailiffs and other staff of a French Judicial Court as witnesses. Bernard Alapetite admits that he was convicted and served time in a French jail in 2000 for selling pornographic videos of under-aged boys, but he said he didn't produced those videos; he bought them from an Eastern European country and sold the copies. “I was in Paris, on May 3, in Brussels on May 4, in Namur, on May 5, and I voted for the French presidential elections on May 6, in Paris”

ANTONIO TOSCANO
Antonio Toscano is a Spanish investigative journalist who claimed to know the name of Madeleine's abductor. In several interviews with Spanish newspapers and TV companies he introduced himself as an expert in satanic cults. Antonio Toscano is certain the four-year-old girl was snatched by a French paedophile on orders from wealthy organisers of a European child sex network. It was reported that he handed his file of evidence to the PJ on 27th June.
