Madeleine McCann: The revelation that Portuguese police have dismissed new leads was branded a 'disgrace' by friends of Kate and Gerry McCann
Portuguese police have dismissed up to four potential Madeleine McCann leads in the past week by telling informers: 'The case is closed, she is dead.'

All the witnesses who came forward offering information about the missing youngster were waved away by indifferent officers in the Algarve.

The revelation was described as a 'disgrace' by friends of Kate and Gerry McCann, who are spearheading a renewed appeal to find their daughter two years after she vanished in Portugal.

Yesterday two private detectives employed by the couple were rebuffed as they tried to question paedophile Raymond Hewlett in his hospital bed in Germany.

Former soldier Hewlett, 62, who was living in the Algarve when Madeleine went missing and has a history of sex attacks on girls, hid in his room and refused to see the pair.

Hewlett, who has cancer, is one of several fresh leads that have flooded in to investigators in the past few weeks.

The McCanns are privately furious that the Portuguese police - who in theory are still in charge of the inquiry - have refused to accept new tip-offs.

A source close to the investigation said: 'In the last week, three or four people have approached the Portuguese police with information, and they were told not to worry them because the case was closed and she is dead.'

It is understood these people later gave their information directly to the McCanns' private detectives.

But the source said: 'What if there are other people who tried to give information and then simply gave up when they were sent away? They could have been squandering potentially significant new leads.'

Although Portuguese prosecutors announced last year they were shelving the Madeleine case, Leicestershire Police still refer new leads to them and claim the Portuguese are still in charge of the inquiry.

A friend of the McCanns - both doctors from Rothley, Leicestershire - said: 'It's a disgrace frankly, it's beyond frustrating. It is exactly the attitude that we have been up against for months.

Investigation: Convicted paedophile, Raymond Hewlett, left, refused to see two private detectives employed by the McCanns while his wife, Marianna Schmuker played 'silly games' with the detectives

'They closed the inquiry and were not prepared to lift a finger.'

Two private detectives, former Detective Inspector Dave Edgar and former Detective Sergeant Arthur Cowley, employed by the McCanns flew to Aachen in Germany on Sunday night in an attempt to question Hewlett.

Hewlett, left, whose son Wayne cut all ties with his father 20 years ago and a sketch of a man allegedly seen close to the resort when Madeleine was abducted
They spent ten minutes talking to his German wife Marianna Schmuker in her council apartment in the city.

But when they visited the hospital yesterday, Hewlett - who has spent much of his life in jail or on the run from police - made it plain he had no intention of cooperating.

Mr Edgar said: 'If he's got nothing to hide, he should speak to us. It is a matter of urgency because of his medical condition.'

The two investigators also came up against a wall of German bureaucracy.

Because Hewlett is not suspected of a crime in Germany, the authorities cannot compel him to cooperate - unless they receive a request from British Police.

However, West Yorkshire police have confirmed they are 'actively seeking' Hewlett in connection with an indecent assault on an eight-year-old in 1975.

The McCanns are privately furious that the Portuguese police have refused to accept new tip-offs

Yesterday sick letters he wrote to his own daughter were revealed. Gina, 41, was 20 when he scrawled the self-pitying missives from his cell at Risley remand centre in Warrington, Cheshire, in March 1988.

In the letters he told her she was his 'favourite girl, the only trouble is you grew up'.

Hewlett's son Wayne, 40, a builder, said he was savagely beaten by him as a child. Wayne cut all ties with his father 20 years ago, and said: 'He is a monster.'

"...private detectives employed by the couple were rebuffed as they tried to question paedophile Raymond Hewlett."

Since when do private detectives have the same rights as the police? There is no reason in the world for them to be allowed to question him.

Olivia- sick and tired of it! In what way? If you mean you hope she is found then I would express yourself better but if you mean you are sick and tired of hearing about it that is a terrible thing to say and let's hope you never loose a child like they have!

ANYONE who has information about this child's disappearance should go straight to the McCanns and their detectives and not even bother with the Portuguese police who clearly do not want to find this child alive because it will make them look even more incompetent than they are. I cannot imagine how frustrating this must be for the parents of this child. It is an utter disgrace.

Clearly I do not know all of the details in this case, and the parents have admitted to their culpability and are obviously suffering. All I know is what I read in the media and see and hear on Radio and TV. As a result I have long been convinced that at best the Portuguese Police are inept and useless and worst corrupt and venal.
Unless and until this little girl or her remains are found and someone is held accountable in a court of law this must NEVER, EVER be considered closed. Never mind her parents this little one deserves no less.

Olivia - a child is missing, if it was your own you would not get sick and tired of it and give up! very heartless.....

I am astonished that the Portuguese police apparently discard any new leads because they have closed the case. They say the child is dead, Have I missed something or have they obtained proof of this? It all seems very amateurish and cockeyed to me. It is also worrying that the German police are being less than helpful
Well done McCanns in bringing in these private detectives. I'm sure that they will get to the bottom of it all.

If Portugese police is not interested in this case any more why oh why don't we (our police) take over? Trying to knock on the closed door is just slowing the investigation. Police should be more proactive. My heart goes out to McCanns.

Olivia, Lancs, would this be your opinion if it were your child missing, have a heart woman. Like any parent they will never give up and I for one really feel for them, their life must be a nightmare, let's hope Maddy is found alive.

To Olivia - you poor old thing, "sick and tired of it", are you? Well. poor, poor hard done by you. Just think how the McCanns feel. I am sure anyone of us who have children would stop at nothing to find out the truth. As for the unhelpful attitude of the police, well, Portugal deserves to lose its tourists, maybe then they will do more to help.

To Olivia, Lancs; perhaps if your child had been missing without trace for 2 years you might have given up but the McCanns haven't and are doing everything in their power to find her. Just as most normal loving parents would, I feel. I'm sorry you are "fed up" with hearing about this but you could see the headline so why bother reading the article? You have a choice to do what you like, as do the McCanns and they have chosen to continue looking for their daughter. Get off their case.

- olivia, Lancs, 26/5/2009 00:00

I presume, by this callous and unconcerned statement, that you do not have children of your own? I feel sure that the McCanns would dearly love an answer, and subsequent closure as to what happened to their beautiful little girl - however until that time they WILL keep looking for her and no half decent parent on this earth can or would begrudge them of that.

Quite frankly you should be ashamed of yourself for making such a statement.

If YOU are not interested in the welfare of this little girl, then you shouldn't be reading the article. Have you never heard the saying 'if you have nothing nice to say, then say nothing at all'?

I feel so sorry for the McCanns, and they at least deserve to know the truth as to what happened to their little girl and I hope they do.

Are we still going to Portugal for our holidays with a Police force like that?
I would not dream of it.

I wouldn't speak to the private detectives either - they have no powers of compulsion and more importantly they are not subject to any controls, unlike the police. It is also diffcult to understand why they spent the charity's money on travelling to Germany without first establishing whether he would cooperate.

The Portuguese police are being realistic but of course they're not being paid to keep the case open. The two retired police hired by the McCanns have no locus standi in this case and cannnot go round making demands of anyone. If the British police wish to interview this man about cases in the UK, they will have to go through the proper channels.
I just wonder how many other people were within a 50-miles radius of Praia da Luz in May 2007 and how long it's taken to trawl through to find this particular one?

You know, I now know which country has the most incompetent police force. How irresponsible, dismissive. If they can do that to high profile foreigners in a high profile case, imagine the poor, disable and desperate. Totally and utterly useless.

Anyone who believes they have 'seen' Maddie should contact the McCanns own paid private investigators.

The case is shelved in Portugal....but the McCanns could always ask for it to be re-opened.

Those poor McCanns. They are forever banging their heads against a brick wall! How I feel for them and wish to goodness I could help bring back Madeleine. I don't know how they have survived for so long. I know I couldn't. They have been punished more than enough.

The retired EX detectives, have no more rights than you or I to interview anyone, let alone take a swab for DNA purposes.
Just what would they intend to do with a DNA sample anyway? How could they match it to the crime scene?
