GORDON BROWN  PM

GORDON BROWN (Chancellor of the Exchequer at the time of Madeleine's disappearance; currently Prime Minister) (56) Year 2007
James Gordon Brown was born in Govan, in Glasgow, Scotland, although media have occasionally given his place of birth as Giffnock, Renfrewshire, where his parents were living at the time. Gordon was brought up with his brothers John and Andrew Brown in a manse in Kirkcaldy — the largest town in Fife. He is the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and Labour MP for Kirkcaldy & Cowdenbeath. He took office on 27 June 2007, three days after becoming leader of the Labour Party. Prior to this he served as the Deputy Prime Minister/Chancellor of the Exchequer in Tony Blair's government from 1997 to 2007. On May 16, Gordon Brown met with members of McCann family and “pledged to help in anyway (he) can". Gordon Brown has personally intervened in the search for missing four-year-old Madeleine McCann after her parents became frustrated by the lack of progress in the police investigation. After a series of telephone conversations with Madeleine's father, the Chancellor requested assistance from the Foreign Office and the Home Office. He asked that pressure be brought to bear on the Portuguese authorities to allow more information about the inquiry to be made public. A source close to the McCann family said: "Within a day of the family speaking to Gordon Brown and expressing their frustration about certain things, the whole attitude of the Portuguese police changed and they found them much more open. The sequence of events suggests some influence was exerted from above." The first foreign visitor to No 10 Downing Street after Gordon Brown became Prime Minister was his Portuguese counterpart Jose Socrates. Speaking to a press conference afaterwards, Mr Brown thanked the Portuguese authorities for their efforts in trying to find missing four-year-old Madeleine McCann. And Mr Brown also said the British Government would do all it could to help locate the youngster.

Liverpool-born Kate McCann has told her parents she is scared Sean and Amelie may be put in care or placed on the “in need” or “at risk” register, after police and social services held talks about her case on 10th September. Labour MP for South Shields; he entered Parliament on 7 June 2001 — General election. He currently holds the post of Secretary of State, Foreign & Commonwealth Office (since 28th June 2007). The parents of missing Madeleine McCann plan to appeal directly to Foreign Secretary David Miliband as pressure mounts on them as suspects behind her disappearance. David Hughes, one of the McCann family's inner circle of advisers, said: "If the situation progresses much further, we'll make direct contact again with Mr Miliband to ask for his help and support." Mr Miliband first became involved with the McCann case in June, but is another who has remained silent without officially withdrawing his support. David Miliband was named as the person who would attend the signing of the Lisbon Treaty in December instead of Gordon Brown - Gordon Brown attended himself in the end.
